Brrr! What to do with maids in winter?

The winter months can be stressful for houseplants. Lack of natural light, dry air from heating and reduced supply of nutrients can lead to weakening of plants. Now is the time to carefully inspect each plant. Look for the color of the leaves, the presence of unusual spots or signs of pests. Don't forget to check the root system too - sometimes the pest or problem is hidden in the substrate. Performing this "general inspection" will allow you to identify and address any problems before they develop into more serious problems.

Light

Keep the plants in the brighter parts of your home during the winter, they don't get as much light as they would like during the winter. If you're looking for a trick, don't be afraid to reach for artificial lighting specifically for plant growth. You can read more about light in our article here . In the spring, you can move the plants further to avoid direct sunlight that could damage them .

Fertilization

During the winter we do not fertilize the plants , they rest, but after the winter they will require nutrition to support growth. In the interim period, when we are not fertilizing the plants, you can use Lignohumate , which is an excellent choice for supporting the "immunity" of plants. This natural growth stimulator helps improve soil structure, increases the soil's ability to retain nutrients and promotes healthy root growth. It is a safe and ecological choice for your plants. Apply it according to the instructions on the package so that your plants get the support they need in a difficult period such as winter.

Dressing

We are currently experiencing the worst frosts, so it is possible that you will be even more careful with watering. Remember, overwatering is worse than underwatering . Make sure that the substrate is always dry before watering. Use standing water at room temperature so that the plants do not suffer from excessive temperature shock. You can read how to water plants correctly in our article here .

How to prepare your plants for spring

In a few months we will finally see it! It will be spring, the best season when nature slowly wakes up and with it our indoor plants. After months of short, dark days and cooler temperatures, it's time to focus on restoring and strengthening our green housemates . Why is it important to pay special attention to plants during this period? The winter may have affected their growth and health and now is the time to regenerate them and prepare for a period of lush growth.

In winter, plants usually require less water, but with the onset of spring, their needs change. Start gradually increasing the amount of water you give your plants, but always taking into account the specific needs of each species as well as the weather.

Transplanting

If you noticed during the winter that your plants stop growing or the roots protrude from the drainage holes of the flower pot, wait until spring to transplant. Once spring arrives, it's time for action . Choose a more suitable flower pot and a quality substrate that will provide your plants with everything they need for healthy growth. When transplanting, use our substrates and transplant mat to make your work as efficient and clean as possible.

Do not underestimate the importance of sharp, high-quality scissors for cutting off old roots or for propagation . We have them available for purchase at our store .

Maintenance after winter

After winter, it is likely that some parts of your plants are damaged or weakened. Spring is the ideal time to trim these parts to encourage the growth of new parts of the plant . Remove all dead, damaged or diseased parts of the plant, which includes leaves, flowers and in some cases parts of the stems. This pruning not only improves the appearance of your plant, but also promotes healthier and stronger growth.

Did your plant die in the winter?

Losing a plant can be disappointing, but it's also an opportunity to learn something new. You may find that a certain type of plant is not suitable for the conditions of your home, or that it needs to adjust the way of care.
Every plant is unique and what works for one may not necessarily work for another .

Caring for houseplants is also a lesson in patience. Plants need time to grow, adapt and heal. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new care methods or different types of plants. With every new plant you bring into your home, you gain valuable experience .

Don't let one failure discourage you. Instead, focus on the joy and satisfaction your green companions bring you every day.

Remember that every grower, whether a beginner or an expert, is always learning and developing. Every plant that passes through your hands is an opportunity for growth - not only for the plant, but for you as well .
